KOUKI is best known as the vocalist of D=OUT, but his artistic journey extends far beyond that. He also fronts the visual kei enka band Sakura Zensen, while simultaneously leading two solo projects: Onigashima and Hanamizakura Kouki. His career has already taken him abroad, performing in Latin America, as well as in the USA and London as a solo artist. This fall, he adds a new chapter to his international endeavors by coming to France, where he will take part in a fashion show in early October 2025 — as KOUKI is also a model in his own right.

On this occasion, he will perform a live show in Paris on October 1st at Backstage By The Mill, as part of Visual-kei Night, a DJ event fully dedicated to visual kei.

We had the pleasure of catching up with him once again for a brand-new interview!

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to interview you and for your time!
We hope that you’re enjoying your time in France !

When you think of France, what comes to mind?

KOUKI: I guess “The Rose of Versailles (the manga)”, and I like French cuisine too.

Are there any sightseeing spots in Paris you’d like to visit?

KOUKI: I’d like to see the Arc de Triomphe, museums, and beautiful buildings.

Is there any food you’d like to try in Paris?

KOUKI: I’d like to try the Parisian dish, steak frites.

Do you have a favourite film, drama, or anime set in France?

KOUKI: I have watched the film and musical Les Miserables. It’s such a deeply moving story.

Are there any aspects of French culture that inspire your music or your visual aesthetic?

KOUKI: I used to listen to MALICE MIZER when I was a student and as I really liked them, I think their music certainly influenced me to some extent.

Which song would you recommend to someone discovering your musical world for the very first time?

KOUKI: I’d recommend “Kanden 18 gou” by D=OUT. We often perform it live, and I’d very much like to sing it in France as well. So please give it a listen.

You’ve already performed in the United States, Latin America, and London. Do you have a particularly memorable story to share from those experiences?

KOUKI: When I toured Latin America, it took me 40 hours to get there. After that experience, travelling to other countries felt so much closer in comparison.

You’re also a model. How did you step into that field? Was it a long-standing passion or an opportunity you decided to seize?

KOUKI: My costume designer invited me to collaborate on photo shoots. She recommended me for further opportunities, which eventually gave me the chance to walk the runway.

You are well known for your tricks with a folding fan. Will we have a chance to see it in Paris?

KOUKI: I think I’ll be able to perform it during the gig in France. So please come and see me live!

D=OUT’s songs often have lyrics with very fast pronunciation. For those of us who don’t speak Japanese, it’s impossible to sing. Do you have a Japanese tongue twister you could recommend?

KOUKI: “Nama mugi, nama gome, nama tamago” - Try saying this five times (lol)

Do you have a message for your French fans who are eagerly awaiting your return?

KOUKI: It’s been quite some time since I last performed in France, and this will be my first solo show. I will be singing D=OUT’s songs and I’d also like to share Japanese culture and music with everyone in France. So I hope you will come along and join me on the day.

Merci de nous accorder cette interview et de prendre le temps d’échanger avec nous ! Nous espérons que vous profiterez de votre séjour en France !

Quand vous pensez à la France, qu’est-ce qui vous vient à l’esprit ?

KOUKI : Je dirais « La Rose de Versailles » (le manga). Et j’aime aussi la cuisine française.

Y a-t-il des lieux touristiques à Paris que vous aimeriez visiter ?

KOUKI : J’aimerais voir l’Arc de Triomphe, les musées et les beaux bâtiments.

Y a-t-il un plat que vous aimeriez goûter à Paris ?

KOUKI : J’aimerais essayer un plat parisien, le steak frites.

Avez-vous un film, un drama ou un anime se déroulant en France que vous appréciez particulièrement ?

KOUKI : J’ai vu le film et la comédie musicale « Les Misérables ». C’est une histoire vraiment bouleversante.

Y a-t-il des éléments de la culture française qui vous inspirent dans votre musique ou dans votre esthétique visuelle ?

KOUKI : Quand j’étais étudiant, j’écoutais MALICE MIZER, que j’aimais beaucoup. Je pense que leur musique m’a certainement influencé d’une certaine manière.

Quel titre recommanderiez-vous à quelqu’un qui découvre votre univers musical pour la première fois ?

KOUKI : Je recommanderais « Kanden 18 gou » de D=OUT. C’est un morceau que nous jouons souvent en live, et j’aimerais vraiment le chanter en France aussi. Alors je vous invite à l’écouter.

Vous vous êtes déjà produit aux États-Unis, en Amérique Latine et à Londres. Avez-vous une anecdote marquante à partager ?

KOUKI : Lors de ma tournée en Amérique Latine, il m’a fallu 40 heures de voyage pour y arriver. Après cette expérience, tous mes autres déplacements à l’étranger m’ont semblé beaucoup plus courts en comparaison.

Vous êtes aussi mannequin. Comment êtes-vous arrivé dans ce domaine ? Était-ce une passion de longue date ou une opportunité que vous avez saisie ?

KOUKI : Ma costumière m’a invité à collaborer sur des séances photo. Elle m’a ensuite recommandé pour d’autres projets, ce qui m’a finalement donné l’occasion de défiler sur un podium.

Vous êtes connu pour vos performances avec un éventail. Aura-t-on la chance de les voir à Paris ?

KOUKI : Je pense que je pourrai les présenter lors du concert en France. Alors venez me voir sur scène !

Les chansons de D=OUT comportent souvent des paroles très rapides. Pour ceux qui ne parlent pas japonais, c’est impossible à chanter. Auriez-vous un virelangue japonais à recommander ?

KOUKI : « Nama mugi, nama gome, nama tamago » — Essayez de le dire cinq fois de suite (rires).

Avez-vous un message pour vos fans français qui attendent avec impatience votre retour ?

KOUKI : Cela fait un bon moment que je ne me suis pas produit en France, et ce sera mon premier concert solo. Je chanterai des morceaux de D=OUT et j’aimerais aussi partager la culture et la musique japonaises avec tout le monde. J’espère vraiment que vous viendrez me voir ce jour-là.

Danke für deine Zeit und dass du uns die Möglichkeit gibst, dich zu interviewen. Wir hoffen, du genießt deine Zeit in Frankreich!

Wenn du an Frankreich denkst, was kommt dir da in den Sinn?

KOUKI: Ich denke an "The Rose of Versailles" (den Manga), außerdem mag ich die französische Küche.

Gibt es Sehenswürdigkeiten in Paris, die du gern besuchen würdest?

KOUKI: Ich würde gern den Arc de Triomphe sehen, Museen und schöne Gebäude.

Welches Essen möchtest du in Paris probieren?

KOUKI: Ich würde gerne das Pariser Gericht Steak Frites probieren.

Hast du einen Lieblingsfilm, ein Lieblingsdrama oder einen Lieblingsanime, der in Frankreich spielt?

KOUKI: Ich habe den Film und das Musical Les Misérables gesehen. So eine bewegende Geschichte!

Gibt es Aspekte der französischen Kultur, die deine Musik oder visuelle Ästhetik inspirieren?

KOUKI: Als ich Schüler war, habe ich oft MALICE MIZER gehört, und da ich sie wirklich mochte, hat ihre Musik mich in gewisser Weise beeinflusst.

Welchen Song würdest du jemandem empfehlen, der deine Musik zum ersten Mal entdeckt?

KOUKI: Ich würde „Kanden 18 gou” von D=OUT empfehlen. Wir spielen das oft live und ich würde den Song sehr gerne auch in Frankreich singen. Also hört ihn euch bitte mal an.

Du bist bereits in den Vereinigten Staaten, Lateinamerika und London aufgetreten. Hast du aus diesen Erlebnissen eine besonders unvergessliche Geschichte zu erzählen?

KOUKI: Als ich durch Lateinamerika tourte, brauchte ich 40 Stunden, um dorthin zu gelangen. Seit dieser Erfahrung kommt mir das Reisen in andere Länder im Vergleich dazu viel näher vor.

Du bist auch Model. Wie bist du zu diesem Bereich gekommen? War das schon immer deine Leidenschaft oder eine Gelegenheit, die du einfach ergriffen hast?

KOUKI: Meine Kostümdesignerin hat mich eingeladen, bei Fotoshootings mitzumachen. Sie hat mich für weitere Aufträge empfohlen, wodurch ich schließlich die Chance bekam, auf dem Laufsteg zu laufen.

Du bist bekannt für deine Tricks mit einem Faltfächer. Werden wir die Gelegenheit haben, das in Paris zu sehen?

KOUKI: Ich denke, das werde ich beim Auftritt in Frankreich vorführen können. Also kommt bitte und seht mich live!

Die Songs von D=OUT haben oft Texte mit sehr schneller Aussprache. Für diejenigen von uns, die kein Japanisch sprechen, ist es unmöglich, sie zu singen. Gibt es einen japanischen Zungenbrecher, den du empfehlen kannst?

KOUKI: „Nama mugi, nama gome, nama tamago“ – versuch, das mal fünfmal hintereinander zu sagen (lacht).

Hast du eine Botschaft für deine französischen Fans, die gespannt auf deine Rückkehr warten?

KOUKI: Es ist schon eine ganze Weile her, seit ich das letzte Mal in Frankreich aufgetreten bin, und dies wird mein erster Soloauftritt. Ich werde Songs von D=OUT singen und möchte auch die japanische Kultur und Musik mit allen in Frankreich teilen. Ich hoffe also, dass ihr an diesem Tag dabei sein werdet. Ich freue mich darauf, euch alle dort zu sehen.

幸樹さん、こんにちは。この度はご多忙の中、インタビューにご対応いただき誠にありがとうございます。フランスでの滞在を楽しんでいただければ幸いです。

フランスといえば、何を思い浮かべますか？
KOUKI: ベルサイユの薔薇ですかね、あとはフランス料理が好きです。

パリで行きたい観光地はありますか？
KOUKI: 凱旋門とか美術館とか綺麗な建物が見たいです。

パリで試してみたい食べ物はありますか？
KOUKI: パリの料理でステックフリットを食べてみたいです。

フランスを題材にした映画/ドラマ/アニメで好きな作品はありますか？
KOUKI: レミゼラブルの映画やミュージカルを見てます、とても胸を打たれる作品です。

幸樹さんの音楽やヴィジュアル面において、フランス文化から影響を受けた部分はありますか。
KOUKI: MALICE MIZERが好きだったので、学生時代聴いていたので少なくても音楽で影響されてるところはあると思います。

幸樹さんの音楽を初めて聴く方に、おすすめしたい一曲があれば教えてください。
KOUKI: ダウトの曲で感電18号という曲はよくライブでもしますしフランスでもしたいと思っているので、是非聴いてください。

米国や中南米、ロンドンなどでも公演をされたことがありますが、印象的なエピソードがあれば教えてください。
KOUKI: 南米ツアーの時に40時間かけて行ったので、他の国へ行くのがとても近く感じてしまったこと。

幸樹さんはモデルとしてもご活躍されていますが、このお仕事にはどのようなきっかけで関わるようになったのでしょうか。
KOUKI: 衣装でお世話になってる方と一緒に作品撮りをするようになってから推薦していただき、ランウェイを歩いたりさせてもらえるようになりました。

幸樹さんは扇子の使い手ですよね。パリでお目にかかれますか？
KOUKI: フランス公演でもお見せすると思うので是非、ライブに見に来てください！

ダウトの楽曲には、すごく速い発音の歌詞がよく出てきます。日本語ネイティブ以外には真似するのが難しいのですが、何かおすすめの日本の早口言葉はありますか？
KOUKI: 生麦生米生卵これを５回言ってくださいww
